Eryk Kulm - Drummer

ABOUT ME

I am a "Zoppoter", born and bred in Sopot. In the years of my childhood and youth, the Tricity area of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot was an oasis for the arts. Theaters, art exhibits and jazz clubs were part of my upbringing.

I was about 15 when I developed an interest in drum instruments. In that time, I started playing in various Tricity "bigbit" (simple Polish rock) bands. It was only when my older brother took me to a jazz club in Sopot - "Kasyno Jazz at Night"- run by Zofia Komeda and I heard the likes of Mieczysław Kosz, Gucio Dyląg and Sergiusz Perkowski that I decided to devote my life to jazz. I have played with many Tricity jazz musicians including Piotr Nadolski, Helmut Nadolski, Przemek Dyakowski, Jurek Detko, Marcin Januszkiewicz, Olek Śliwa and Staszek Suchocki.

In 1974, I had the pleasure to collaborate with Jazz Carriers.

In 1975, I worked with the "STU" theater from Cracow and then received a scholarship to study at BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC in Boston. The next step was to move to NYC.

After my return to Poland in 1989, I joined Zbyszek Namysłowski's band. Roughly a year and a half later I founded "QUINTESSENCE" where I played with: Zbyszek Jaremko, Jurek Główczewski, Mariusz Bogdanowicz, Wojciech Niedziela, Jacek Niedziela-Meira, Piotr Baron, Piotr Wojtasik, Leszek Możdżer, Adam Kowalewski, Maciej Sikała, Jurek Małek, Tomasz Grzegorski, Paweł Tomaszewski, Andrzej Zielak, Wojciech Karolak, Andrzej Jagodziński, Henryk Miśkiewicz, Adam Cegielski, Tomasz Pruchnicki, Dolph Castellano, Edie Schuller, John Ruocco, Jurek Skalski, Krzysztof Herdzin, Wojtek Pulcyn, Kuba Stankiewicz, Paweł Kaczmarczyk, Sulaiman Hakim, Michał Tokaj, Longineu Parsons, Maciej Adamczak, Robert Majewski and Jan Smoczyński.

In the meantime, I collaborated with Lora Szafran and NEW PRESENTATION, Jarek Śmietana, Ewa Bem and Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski Quintet.

In 1992, I was ranked first twice in Jazz Forum Magazine polls, first as drummer and then as author of the "Birthday" album. And in 2008, many years later, I was happy to receive the Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture from the Polish Ministry of Culture. Maybe I truly deserved it, maybe not; either way, the pleasure was mine.

HOPE TO SEE YOU!
